Clunk on accel and backup

I have an 2006 Lacrosse CXS with 48k miles. Ive noticed for about the last two months or so a clunk on acceleration the first few times after start up. It sounds like a pop and you can feel it in the foot well on the drivers side. I thought it was the transmission then I noticed it when backing out of the driveway and the wheel is turned to extent it will do it too. Ive got to take it to the dealer for a routine maintenance in another week or two. (On the dealer because they forgot to do something last time. Dealer owner happened to be there when I returned to complain. He said your next oil change/maintenance is on us) Anyways, I want an idea of what it could be?

Hard to say over the internet. Clunks and pops are two very different sounds in my mind. Based on what little we know a bad motor mount or CV joints would be one guess. The mechanic actually looking at your car would be your best source of information.

I am also not sure what would be causing your concern. Please keep me posted on your progress with the dealer. Feel free to contact me with any questions in the meantime. Thank you.

Hi there -

I have an '06 LaCrosse CX. We always experience clunks/pops when first accelerating, during light braking (sometimes) and especially when accelerating while turning. The noise seems to come from directly in front of me on the driver's side and can be felt in the steering wheel at times. Almost seems like the dash is making the noise.

If this is what you are experiencing, it is most likely a slip-stick condition with the intermediate steering shaft. The shafts lose lubrication over time and they begin to 'pop' and make noise. There is a TSB on this issue...however, I don't have the number in front of me.

The good news is that it is more of a nuisance than a drivability issue. Mine has been doing it for quite a while (of course, it started right after the warranty expired...funny how that happens). I have a factory service manual set and replacing the part isn't hard at all...two pinch nuts. (Although you HAVE to be sure to lock the steering in place using a special pin or you'll be in a mess of trouble.) Although...if you're not mechanically inclined or experienced working with cars, I wouldn't do this one. Pay the dealer if it bothers you enough to take action.

Thanks,

Brian

Very good info. I need to get this done. Just spent 1k to do all the mounts and some other things just to find the problem still there.
